UK plans GBP 16 per ton carbon tax to replace EU ETS market

30.10.2018 – Should Britain exit the EU without a deal, UK emitters will pay GBP 16 a ton under a planned Carbon Emissions Tax to replace the EU carbon-market portion of those emissions costs, according to a recent government paper. The government would maintain the current GBP 18 price floor for CO2 emissions. While the two charges together amount to the same charge that these firms currently pay, the fixed tax would prevent polluters for paying more in the event that prices surge in the EU’s emissions market.
