Put price on carbon, stop bad bets on fossil fuels – UN's Guterres

15 November 2017 – Governments should put a price on carbon emissions to help combat global warming and stop making bad bets on fossil fuels, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at talks on a climate pact weakened by a U.S. pullout. Guterres told almost 200 nations in at COP23 in Bonn that a shift to cleaner energies would boost rather than hamper economic growth. After U.S. President Donald Trump decided to withdraw and instead promote domestic fossil fuels, Guterres urged governments to put a price on carbon to deter emissions and encouraged carbon trading as a way to restrict emissions. To meet the Paris goals, at least 50% global coverage of carbon pricing initiatives is required. Guterres called the Group of 20 biggest economies to lead.
