10 May 2017 – Tobias Schmidt (Professor, ETH Zurich) and Tyeler Matsuo (Researcher, ETH Zurich) argue that reforming fossil fuel subsidies is more complex than simply reducing the total sum of subsidies paid. They reason that phase-out strategies that primarily focus on appeasing the most affected stakeholders are fiscally unsustainable and can only be a superficial solution to much deeper socio-technical problems. Rather, they propose that technology-oriented policies that make greener alternatives to the subsidized fuel more attractive should be used to make the fossil fuel subsidy obsolete.
