Fuel, Food and Utilities Price Reforms in the GCC: A Wake-up Call for Business (Chatham House)

This research paper by Chatham House examines wide-ranging price reforms taking place in the Gulf countries as a response to suppressed energy, water and food prices, and the effects of these price reforms on business and the political economy . The paper concludes that smooth transitions to more efficient pricing regimes will entail smart redistribution measures – particularly in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Oman – and harnessing the benefits of new growth sectors. Efficiency and renewable energy markets are two sectors with major potential if governments encourage their development. The paper is available to download from the Chatham House website.
