Diesel Subsidy Reform in India: Lessons learned (IISD)

In October 2014, the Indian government announced a formal end to diesel price regulation. This removal of diesel subsidies, although not yet accompanied by comprehensive price decontrol, represents an important milestone in the reform of energy pricing in India, and provides a useful case of successful fossil fuel subsidy reform. This paper sets out key lessons from the Indian experience with diesel subsidy reform.
