Nine EU countries ask for an aviation carbon tax

11 November 2019: In a joint statement, the Ministers of Finance of the Netherlands, Germany, France, Sweden, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark and Bulgaria asked the European Commission to introduce a tax to neutralize the environmental damages of aviation. EU Commissioner Frans Timmermans, who is responsible for a European Green Deal and a European Climate Law, said he will get back on the matter “hopefully” by 20 December 2019.
