March 27 @ 8:30 am - 4:30 pm CET

On March 27th, 2019, an expert meeting on “Economic instruments for the internalization of environmental costs” was hosted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC). The objective was to discuss economic policy strategies and instruments that contribute to the achievement of the climate goals, as well as their link to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The experts present at the meeting discussed whether climate policies could become an engine for growth and sustainable development or, if they might have adverse effects on the economy. The expert meeting had the participation of Colombian and Chilean officials, who portrayed their countries’ experience with carbon taxation. Experts on environmental fiscal policy discussed the context, shared experiences, research findings, lessons learnt and best practices. The Green Fiscal Policy Network contributed to the expert meeting by sharing experiences concerning the internalization of environmental costs through carbon pricing.
