On March 27th, 2019, an expert meeting on “Economic instruments for the internalization of environmental costs” co-organized by the Green Fiscal Policy Network was hosted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC). The objective was to discuss economic policy strategies and instruments that contribute to the achievement of the climate goals, as well as their link to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The experts present at the meeting discussed whether climate policies could become an engine for growth and sustainable development or, if they might have adverse effects on the economy. The expert meeting counted with presentations on recent experiences with Carbon Pricing in Colombia, Chile and Mexico. Experts on environmental fiscal policy discussed the context, shared experiences, research findings, lessons learnt and best practices. Tatiana Falcao (UNEP) and Eike Meyer (GIZ) contributed to the workshop with presentations on international perspectives on carbon pricing.
