Fisheries subsidies are estimated to amount to $35 billion, of which a large proportion directly or indirectly contributes to over-fishing. These subsidies have perverse impacts on the environment, food security, poverty elimination, livelihoods, employment and the economy. This side event organised by UNCTAD, FAO and UN Environment at the The Ocean Conference discussed pathways to achieve a global agreement that ends such subsidies to level the playing field, protect oceans and their valued resources.
